Recommended Routes from the Hostel Front Door

Suggestions for Walking, Jogging and Cycling

There are plenty of places to visit and trails to explore across the Dumfriesshire region, but the following suggested routes are possible right from the hostel itself.

 

If you fancy an evening stroll, a 5K jog before breakfast, or a more demanding full day's walk - consider some of the options below!

1 Mile Walk/Jog

Moffat Independent Hostel Circuit

This route is ideal for a short stroll or jog. The route follows a quiet stretch of lane, and relatively easy paths through fields and woods.

 

  1. From the hostel , turn left down Well Road and continue for 650m Turn left at the stone farm building and follow the footpath signposted to Moffat.
  2. After 200m pass through the metal gate and follow the fence along the lowest side of the field.
  3. After 300m go through the metal gate and continue straight down the woodland path.
  4. After 400m turn left and follow the signposted path to Haywood Road.
  5. At the end of the path turn left and continue until Haywood Road hits Well Road. Turn right onto Well Road and the hostel is 50m on your right.

3km Walk or Jog

The Road to Moffat Well

This 3km route is perfect for a stroll or a jog. The route follows a quiet stretch of Well Road, so is ideal if you don't want to run cross-country, or if the ground is particularly muddy.

 

  1. Turn left out of the hostel gates and continue down Well Road for about a mile.
  2. At the end of the road, there is a very small car park with an information board about the Moffat Well.
  3. The well is located about 50m from the car park.
  4. Return to the hostel by the same route.

5km Walk or Jog

Moffat Independent Hostel Circuit - Longer Version!

This route is perfect for a 5km cross country jog. Parts of this trail are quite steep, with tripping hazards including roots, mud, and stones - please take care if jogging and wear appropriate footwear.

 

  1. From the hostel, turn left down Well Road and continue for 650m Turn left at the stone farm building and follow the footpath signposted to Moffat.
  2. After 200m pass through the metal gate and follow the fence along the lowest side of the field.
  3. After 300m go through the metal gate and continue straight down the woodland path.
  4. After 700m turn right and take the path up hill towards Gallow Hill
  5. Follow the path in a clockwork loop around Gallow hill
  6. Take the same route down the hill, and continue down Old Well Road
  7. Turn left down Well Road and continue 500m back to the hostel

13 Mile / 20 km Hike

Hart Fell Summit (808m)

This 3km route is perfect for a stroll or a jog. The route is entirely along the quietest stretch of Well Road, so is ideal if you dont want to run cross-country, or if the ground is particularly muddy.

  1. Turn left out of the hostel gates and continue down Well Road for about a mile.
  2. At the end of the road, there is a very small car park with an information board about the Moffat Well.
  3. The well is located about 50m from the car park.
  4. Return to the hostel by the same route.
